Hernán Sarmiento Sábater nació el 10 de agosto de 1947 en Santiago. Estudiaba Medicina en la Universidad de Chile y realizaba su internado en la posta del Hospital Exequiel González Cortés. Fue detenido por efectivos de Carabineros el 28 de julio de 1974, a los 26 años en Parral tras visitar a su hermano en la cárcel de la misma ciudad, junto a Aroldo Vivian Laurie Luengo. Habría sido trasladado a Colonia Dignidad. Ambos militantes del MIR se encuentran desaparecidos.
